After 30 races without a win, Dale Jarrett was able
to win the Pocono 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Pocono Raceway on
Sunday. Now that he has driven to a victory the rumors about him
actually driving the "Big Brown Truck" are proving false. As
most know Jarrett is sponsored by UPS and there are a series of
commercials that seem to want him to drive the Big Brown Truck.
Jarrett won but the race looked like it belonged to his teammate Ricky
Rudd. Last week at Dover International Speedway Rudd looked like
a winner until he had to make an extra pit stop for a loose lug nut
late in the race.
On Sunday Rudd was leading with about 30 laps to go. He had a comfortable lead. It looked like it would be Rudd and Jarrett finishing one-two for the Robert Yates team. Rudd's Texaco sponsored Ford developed a tire problem, a slow leak, in the final laps and he ended up crashed in the wall. He was credited with a 17th place finish. In fact after the accident he was still able to keep the car going, after a pit stop for a new tire, and by doing that Rudd was able to gain one position in the finish when Todd Bodine blew an engine and was unable to finish. Every position gained, every point earned, is important when there is so much point fund money at stake at the end of the season. NASCAR Winston Cup cars are headed to Michigan International Speedway this weekend. They will be back at Pocono on July 28th for the Pennsylvania 500. Good tickets are available. It looked like there was a full house, or close, at the Sunday Pocono 500 so ordering your tickets right now would be a good idea. Telephone 570.646.2300. TODD SHAFFER won his second 25-lap Aumiller's Insurance sprint car feature race of the season at Port Royal, PA Speedway on Saturday. Unfortunately on the same night, on the seventh lap, 16 year old Kyle Ganoe of Mifflintown, PA was seriously injured when his sprint car suffered a flat left rear tire that caused him to flip. His car became entangled in the catch fence, that protects spectators, and erupted in fire. Fire crews had a difficult time trying to extinguish the fire because the fuel tank cap had come off spewing fuel in the area. Ganoe was able to escape under his own power. He had burns to his hands, arms, legs and feet. He was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. We are told that an operation was to be performed this past Tuesday. Ganoe is expected to be in the hospital for AT LEAST three weeks. Ganoe turns 17 on June 21. Todd Shaffer was one of the first out of his race car and running to the accident to help Ganoe.
