Imagine that! An entire weekend with rain
not playing any part in the scheduling of auto racing events.
FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO PLAN WELL IN ADVANCE. On Thursday, July 24th the Lyons Fire Co. Booster Club will present their 13th Annual RACEFEST. NASCAR Winston Cup racer Kenny Wallace, driver of the #23 Stacker 2 Dodge, will be appearing. And the Jimmie Johnson Lowe's Hardware sponsored #48 Winston Cup car will be on display. In addition there will be vendors on hand, local racers will have their race cars on display, food and refreshments will be available and there will be opportunities to win some prizes. Add to that some entertainment and you have the makings of a great day of FUN. There will be free autographs from 5 - 7 p.m. The day of activities, starting at noon, will be sponsored by Lyons Fire Company Booster Club, East Penn Manufacturing Co. Inc. (DEKA Batteries), Don Christman's Auto Repair and John R. Young & Co. (Pennzoil). It all takes place at Lyons Fire Co. Lyon Station, PA. CRAIG VONDOHREN won his first NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature of the season at Big Diamond Raceway on Friday. VonDohren topped Doug Hoffman with Rick Laubach earning a strong third. Craig Whitmoyer won his second feature out of the last three presented for the Sportsman Modifieds. And it was Rodney Ulsh winning the Roadrunner feature after Doug Hendricks had his right rear wheel fall off while leading. Coming up this Friday, July 4, at Big Diamond Raceway is the Georgie Stevenson Memorial, run in memory of a young man who lost his life to cancer some years back. The family continues to support the event in an effort to raise funds for local charities. The Friday night show, starting at 7 p.m., earlier than usual, will include NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds in Twin-20 lap features along with Roadrunners and Sportsman Modifieds. In addition there will be a fireworks display. AFTER FINISHING SECOND FOUR TIMES THIS SEASON Joe Diehl was able to win his first career 410 sprint car main event at Clinton County Speedway on Friday night. The Super Stocks feature went to Jamin Champman while Kyle Parson got another win in the Pro Stocks. Dave Riddel was tops in the Daredevil main event and Dennis Weisgarber won the 4 Cylinder Enduro. This Friday, July 4th, the Sprint Cars will return for the Nittany 50 presented by Middleswarth Potato Chips. The event earns the winner $1,200. The Super Stocks, Daredevils, Pro Stocks and Enduros will be part of the Fourth of July show. For more speedway news, and the time the event starts, check in at www.clintoncountyracing.com. Nice gesture as drivers collected $668 from fans to contribute to the York County Racing Club's Injured Driver's Fund in the name of Joe Whitcomb, the driver who lost his life at Selinsgrove, PA Speedway the previous weekend. THE "RED ROCKET' IS HOT is how Billy Meyer described Greg Hodnett's win in the Williams Grove Speedway race results news release. Hodnett, who travels from his home in Memphis, Tenn., to race in Central Pennsylvania, staged quite a battle with "Fast Freddy" Rahmer to win the 25-lap feature. This was his third win of the season at the Grove. Rahmer had to settle for second followed by Rick Lafferty. Cory Haas won the 25-lap 358 sprint feature race. The $10,000 to win Mitch Smith Memorial will be the big attraction at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, 8 p.m. Expect a stellar field of 410 sprint car racers to be on hand as the PA Sprint Speedweek Series gets down to the final events. THE ONLY THING ABLE TO STOP GAY STUHLER this year is the rain. He dominated the 50-lap Johnny Roberts Memorial for Late Model stock cars at Hagerstown, MD Speedway on Saturday in front of the largest crowd of the season. It was his seventh win of the season. Pete Weaver got his first win of the season in the 20-lap Hoosier Tires Mid-Atlantic late model sportsman feature and Mike Warrenfeltz took his first win in the Pure Stock feature. Morris Tucker tabbed a victory in the Vintage cars feature. Saturday night action at Hagerstown, MD Speedway will include late models, late model sportsman, pure stocks and enduro competition with the green flag falling at 7:30 p.m. AT LINCOLN SPEEDWAY Cris Eash grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and set the pace for the entire 30-laps of the 4th Annual Kevin Gobrecht Memorial PA Sprint Speedweek feature on Saturday night. The win was worth $5,000. Second spot went to multi time track champion Fred Rahmer (amazing fact that Rahmer has yet to win a feature at Lincoln). Lance Dewease earned third. |
Mike Zeigler Sr. drove with a heavy heart and
was on a mission this night after crew member Robby Miller lost his life
in a traffic accident earlier in the week. Zeigler was able to win the
Thundercar feature in a close battle with Duane Hahn. This Saturday night the 410 sprint cars have the night off as many of the sprint car talents will be competing in Pennsylvania Speedweek action elsewhere. Instead fans will see the popular 358 sprint cars in action along with 305 sprint cars and Thundercar racers. There will be a gigantic fireworks show topping the night. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY NIGHT Ben Hatt looked as if he was going to get his first career modified feature win at the Berks County oval. He led the 30 lap feature from the drop of the green right on up to the second turn of the final lap when Meme DeSantis took the look route and was able to win a "squeaker." DeSantis said in victory lane that he felt bad about taking the win away from Hatt and that Ben deserved the win. Hatt settled for second while point leader Jeff Strunk got a third. Chuck Schutz celebrated his birthday by giving himself a present in the form of a victory, his first of the season, in the 20-lapper for Late Model stock cars. Randy Stoudt, a big winner last season, is still looking for his first win of the season after settling for second. The Firecracker 40 for Late Models will top the action at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA on Saturday, July 5th at 7:30 p.m. Also part of the show will be the NASCAR Modifieds and there will be a great FIREWORKS display. The entire night will be run in memory of the Jerry Glase, a long time employee at the track who lost his battle with cancer in September, 2002. SILVER SPRING SPEEDWAY had Jim Shuttlsworth winning the prestigious Firecracker 40 Super Sportsman feature. After missing a few races due to an early season accident Shuttlesworth looked strong as he held off Rich Eichelberger to pick up the $2,000 first place money. Carl Billet dominated the late model feature race winning his 49th career victory at Silver Spring Speedway. Saturday night, July 5, 7 p.m. is Bud Night at Silver Spring Speedway. The will be racing for the Super Sportsman and Late Model stock cars. ON A PERSONAL NOTE I was very happy to see Bob Beidelman win Saturday night's Firecracker 40 for sprint cars at Selinsgrove Speedway. The win was the first for Beidelman at the track since My 4, 1996. "This is the 26th year of racing for me and I'm not old but I am gray," said Beidelman from victory lane. "It's been five years since we won anywhere." Beidelman suffered some very serious, life-threatening, burns over most of his body some years back due to an explosion at his race shop. Despite the injuries Beidelman has been able to return to the sport he loves, be a consistent performer, and win. Cory Haas finished second followed by Blane Heimbach. The speedway remembered Joe Whitcomb who died as a result of injuries suffered in a sprint car accident at the track the previous Saturday. Whitcombs family and race crew were on hand. More than $4,000 was collected at the track and presented to the Whitcomb family. The Late Model feature was won by Jeff Rine and Nate Kerstetter was tops in the Pro Stock feature event. Joey Keister won the Roadrunner feature. THE PA SPRINT SPEEDWEEK SERIES continues with 410 sprints at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, July 4th. Then it moves on to Port Royal, PA Speedway on Saturday, July 5th. And on Sunday, July 6th the series closes out at Selinsgrove, PA Speedway. Still a few opportunities for fans to see some great sprint car racing. AT NEW EGYPT, NJ SPEEDWAY Frank Cozze was the big winner taking the victory in the 30-lap Modified feature race for the fourth time this season. He also won the $1,000 Big Bang Bonanza in a close battle with track champion Billy Pauch. Mike David won the 15-lap SS Sprint feature race. On Saturday night at 6 p.m. the Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks and SS Sprints will be featured. The Cream Ridge Golf Club Senior Masters Challenge will also be part of the show. This is an event that will have Dads of New Egypt racers in action. THE O'REILLY WORLD OF OUTLAWS returns to the area later this month. A big three day show of Outlaw racing will take place at Williams Grove Speedway on July 24, 25 and 26th. A special three day ticket can be had for $65.00. Telephone 717.697.5000 for information. Enjoy the Fourth of July weekend. Get out and support your local speedway. There is a lot of great auto racing action happening this weekend. Ernie Saxton can be reached at Esaxton144@aol.com |
