NIKI YOUNG won the 25-lap sprint car feature on Auto
Locator Night Friday at Williams Grove Speedway and Danny
Hager took the top spot in the 20-lapper for Super Sportsman.
Young started fourth and got by Doug Esh when his car lost power with just two laps to go, going on to win his first ever 410 sprint feature on the legendary half-mile clay oval. Esh was also shooting for his first ever sprint car win at Williams Grove but had to settle for heartbreak. Young earned $3450 for his win including a bonus from Auto Locator. Second spot went to Fred Rahmer, making a breathtaking three abreast move entering turn three on the 24th lap to go from 2nd to 4th. Keith Kauffman finished third followed by Brook Weibley and Todd Hestor. Danny Hager took the lead from Denny Willey on the fifth lap and had a somewhat easy time of it leading the rest of the way in the 20-lapper for Super Sportsman (these are the same cars seen in action at Silver Spring Speedway on Saturday nights). Frankie Herr came from the rear to finish second with Ken Carberry getting third. The show was delayed for more than an hour when light rain began to fall at the start of the sprint feature at approximately 9:30 p.m. The United Racing Club sprint cars make their one and only appearance of the season at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, August 15th with the green flag falling at 8 p.m. The 410 sprint cars will make up the second part of the show. And it is expected that a couple of the top 410 racers will also be running in the URC show. FOR THE EIGHTH TIME THIS SEASON Blane Heimbach was able to wheel his Middleswarth Beef Jerky/Beavertown Block Co. sponsored sprinter to victory at Clinton County Speedway. In only 2 years of competition at the 1/3-mile clay oval, Heimbach has managed to win 10 features moving him to the top five on the all-time winners list for the sprint cars. Other winners on 92.1FM The Mountain Night included Jake Shady in the Super Stocks, Terry Goshorn in Pure Stocks, Kevin Vanamburg in the Super Stocks and Darren Lucas winning the Enduro feature. This Friday, August 15th the Ed Shafer Memorial for Sprint Cars will be presented along with racing for the Super Stocks, Pro Stocks, Daredevils and Enduro racers. Action starts at 7:30 p.m. BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY had Craig VonDohren getting his second win of the season on the 3/8th-mile clay oval in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified 25-lap feature. Ray Swinehart, who challenged VonDohren for much of the second half of the feature and actually led a lap, settled for second followed by Doug Manmiller. The win put VonDohren in front in the chase for the Modified crown at Big Diamond Raceway. Two 15-lap features for the Sportsman Modifieds saw Gary Wagner Jr. winning the first and Tom Brennan getting the top spot in the second one. Craig Whitmoyer, in the running for the NASCAR Northeast Region ShortTrack Championship had his hopes diminished as he did not finish in the top ten in either event. Dave Winslow took home the top honors in the NASCAR Roadrunners feature, a 15 lap event. NASCAR Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds and Roadrunners will be part of the tripleheader show at Big Diamond Raceway on Friday, August 15th starting at 8 p.m. And on Friday, August 22nd the United Racing Club sprint cars will be in action along with Sportsman Modifieds and Roadrunners. THINGS ARE BACK TO NORMAL FOR THE REST OF THIS COLUMN. That means there is a lot of bad weather and cancellations to tell you about. GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY in Bechtelsville had the track crew working, getting the track ready for Saturday night racing action when a heavy rain fell on the track. And with a forecast of more to come the Craftsman Tools Night was cancelled. Jeff Strunk, the point leader in NASCAR Modifieds at Grandview, continues to lead in the NASCAR New England Regional standings and if he can stay on top of those standings all season he will take home a hefty $45,000. In addition he gets to accept his championship awards and check at the plush Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN on November 1 as part of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series awards function. Modifieds and Late Models return to Grandview Speedway on Saturday night, August 16th, 7:30 p.m. It will be Rossi Welding/Arctic Cat Night with at least 13 events of stock car racing being presented. BRIDGEPORT, NJ SPEEDWAY had their Saturday night events washed out. The Big Block Modifieds will be in action on Saturday, August 16th, starting at 6 p.m. with Jasper Sprints, Sportsman and Outlaw stocks also seeing action. And on Friday night, 7 p.m. there is an exciting show of 125, 270 and 600 cc Micro Sprint, 4-cylinder stock and Sportsman stock car racing. Part of the show is run on a quarter-mile dirt oval while the Sportsmen stocks are featured on the 5/8th mile dirt oval. MORE RAIN fell at Silver Spring Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA. They will try again on Saturday, August 16th, with a 7 p.m. show that will feature the Super Sportsman along with a 40 lap main event for the Street Stocks. A Super Sportsman B-main is also part of the Saturday night action. |
SUSQUEHANNA SPEEDWAY has a lot of action planned for
the balance of August. This Sunday, August 17th, it will be
Test-and-Tune Night for all divisions of competition. This is a pay if
your participate deal with a charge of $200 per race car. And on Sunday, August 24th, the House of Bull Restaurant & Hooter's of York will sponsor the night with the Super Sportsman being featured along with Limited Late Models and Sportsman Modifieds (called sportsman at many tracks). The season closes out on Sunday, August 31st with the 3rd Annual Coors York County Nationals being presented for the 410 sprint cars. At present the event is scheduled to pay $7,500 to win. And there will be a first time appearance of 305 sprint cars along with 4-cylinder stocks and a 50-lap Enduro Championship. HOT OFF THE PRESS…. Duane Howard won the 30-lap Modified featuree at Susquehanna on Sunday night. Tom Umbenhauer and Ray Swinehart each won 20-lappers for the Modifieds. SELINSGROVE SPEEDWAY had Scott Haus winning on SUNDAY night (Saturday was rained out) in the 30-lap Late Model feature and Chad Layton was tops in the sprints for the third time. This Saturday, August 16, they feature sprints, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners as part of Harry's U-Pull-It Auto Parts Night starting at 7 p.m. TALK ABOUT BAD WEATHER PROBLEMS. New Egypt, NJ Speedway lost their third night of racing in eight days when they were rained out on Saturday night. This Saturday, August 16th, it's Team IMI Wing Night featuring the return of the always exciting United Racing Club sprint cars. And there will be racing for the Big Block Modifieds, Sportsman and Super Stocks. Racing starts at 6 p.m. And there is a big event coming to New Egypt Speedway on Wednesday, August 20th when NASCAR Winston Cup racers Tony Stewart and Dave Blaney will be at the track along with Stewart's crew chief Greg Zipadelli, TV motorsports commentator Matt Yocum and others. There will be a Stewart and Blaney winner-take-all match race with the two Winston Cup talents going up against some of the top modified shoes. And the "Down & Dirty" 100 for big-block modifieds will have Dave Blaney racing while Tony Stewart will be busy signing autographs. However to get an autograph you must make a minimum donation of $10.00 to the Zippy's Crusade for Kids charity backed by Greg Zipadelli. Only 800 autographs will be available. That show starts at 7:30 p.m. NAZARETH SPEEDWAY offers what may be the most exciting weekend of racing in the area for this season. Fans going out to the one-mile paved oval will have a chance to see the 2003 Firestone Indy 225 weekend on August 22-24. Included in the weekend of racing will be the United States Auto Club Silver Crown cars (Lebanon's Richie Tobias will be in competition), USAC Sprints and the USAC Midgets. And topping it all off will be the Firestone 225 for the Indy Racing League. Many consider the IRL racing being presented this season the most exciting in major league auto racing competition. Sam Hornish Jr. will top the program along with Helio Castroneves, Indy 500 winner Gil deFerran, Sarah Fisher, Scott Sharp, Al Unser Jr. and many others. For information telephone 1-888-629-RACE. HAGERSTOWN, MD SPEEDWAY had Chris Carr of Fleetwood, PA winning the AMA Progressive US Flat Track Hub City Classic motorcycle event on Saturday night. This weekend the speedway offers the Winchester-Hagerstown Speedway Shootout plus open competition pure stocks on Friday at 8 p.m. And on Saturday night the Conococheague 100 for Renegade Dirt Car Series competitors is offered starting at 7:30 p.m. The winner goes home with $10,000 and that should attract many of the best late model racing talents. THE PREVIOUS SATURDAY NIGHT Chris Knopp's wife was being taken to the hospital by his parents so she could give birth to a son, Cole and Chris was racing his sprint car at Lincoln Speedway. He missed the birth. This past Saturday he won his second sprint car feature of the season and dedicated it to his wife, Michelle, and his new son. Billy Wampler won the 20-lap main event for Limited Late Models and Craig Wagaman won the Thundercar 20-lap feature race. KIDS NIGHT is set for Saturday night, August 16th at &:30 p.m. The first 500 kids get a goodie bag. Lots of prizes will be given away. The 410 sprints and thundercars will be featured in the show.
