WHILE THE PORT ROYAL SPEEDWAY IS KNOW FOR AUTO RACING, there's
another kind of excitement coming to the Juniata County oval the week
of Labor Day 2004.
The week gets started with a bang on Opening Day, September 4, as a
large parade will be held during the afternoon. Highlighting the parade
is an appearance of the Budweiser Clydesdale horses from Anheuser- Busch
Brewing Company of St. Louis, Missouri. Local wholesaler, Lingle
Distributing of Lewistown, PA coordinated the arrangements. Opening
night is full of music as recording artist Pete Schlegel and True South
head to the stage in concert.
Sunday September 5 activities include the traditional religious
service and a major concert at night. Tommy Cash and the "Cash Crew"
will perform along with local Central PA cover band, " Fools on Stools".
The unique pairing of these two acts will allow fans young and old to
enjoy a night of entertainment. Tommy Cash, the brother of the late
Johnny Cash, is an accomplished Nashville recording artist in his own
right. He has released albums of his own music and appeared in concert
with his brother many times at venues as large as Madison Square Garden
in New York City. Cash will be playing his brother's music during this
concert as the show is a Johnny Cash Tribute Tour event. Cash and his
band have been touring America and Ireland this year and Fair Officials
were fortunate to be able to book this event on his tour. Plans for the
concert include the playing of some music that was included on Johnny
Cash's final recording released not long before his death.
Fools on Stools is a cover band from the Lewistown, PA area with a
wide arsenal of music. Band members Billy Zeigler, Stan Orndorf, Mel
Bollinger and Sammy Roselle cover all types of music. Currently they perform in
the Mifflin and Centre County area and can be seen weekly on Thursday
nights at Heston's Inn, Yeagertown, PA from the hours of 9-midnight.
Heston's and Yuengling Brewing Company have teamed with the Fair and
Fools to offer patrons a chance to sing with the band. Using a playoff
karoke format, finalists will be narrowed down to a few winners that
will perform on stage with the band during the Fair concert.
Monday afternoon, September 6, the Labor Day Classic for Sprint
Cars and Deryl Stong Memorial for Pro Stocks will run on the speedway
starting at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday Night and Wednesday afternoon Harness
Horse racing is on the speedway. Wednesday night the Charlie Belknap
Hollywood Stunt Show is in front of the grandstand starting at 8:00 P.M.
Thursday activities include a garden tractor competition. Friday and
Saturday include the Tuscarora 50 racing program.
More Fair information will be released weekly until the time of the
event. The Fair Office is currently open Tuesday's, Thursday's and
Friday's from 8:00 A.M. until noon and 1:00 P.M. until 4.
THE MONTH OF AUGUST will bring a variety of
racing to the fans at Williams Grove Speedway with the Jack Gunn
Memorial Triple 20s for sprint cars standing out as the featured
attraction.

plenty of prizes and surprises for the youngsters.
The second event of the weekend is coming up on Sunday evening,
August 8, at 6:00 when an Enduro 200 will be presented. Enduros feature
street stock type cars. Any car that passes safety inspection and
conforms to the rules of the Enduro will be permitted to start. The
winner of the 200-lap grind will earn $1200, a substantial payoff for
this entry level form of racing. The far more powerful late model stock cars will be at Williams
Grove on Friday the 13th along with the sprint cars. Some of the area's
top late model stars are expected to compete.
The Jack Gunn Memorial scheduled for August 20 is one of the
highlights of the season with three 20-lap sprint car features on the
card.
The month will close on the 27th with a sprint car double header
featuring the Grove regulars known as the Pennsylvania Posse and the 360
c.i. powered sprint cars of the United Racing Club. This will be the only URC visit to Williams Grove this season.
