THE LATE MODEL STOCK CARS will return to
Williams Grove Speedway along with the sprint cars on Friday the 13th.
The first heat is scheduled to start at 8:00.
The late model teams are overdue for some nice weather. Rain has
plagued this division at Williams Grove for the past few years and 2004
has been worse than ever.
The late models were scheduled on three previous occasions this
year and each attempt met with foul weather.
Unsanctioned sprint/late model double headers scheduled on April 2
and June 25 were rained out. Even the Stacker 2 late model event was
rained out on June 5, but because of a June 6 rain date that race was
eventually run with Donnie Moran of Dresden, Ohio, getting the win.
In 2003 rain prevented the late models from completing any races at
Williams Grove.
The rainy weather has prevented fans from witnessing some of the
area's top late model drivers in competition at the Mechanicsburg half
mile. Former national champion Rick Eckert has been in the pits for
several of the rainouts along with Grove favorite Gary Stuhler.
Maybe Friday the 13th will bring a change of luck for the late
model teams and their fans at Williams Grove Speedway.
In the sprint car division drivers like Don Kreitz, Jr., Cris Eash,
Keith Kauffman, Doug Esh, Mike Erdley and Brook Weibley will have an
opportunity to advance their positions in the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass
point standings this week.
Actually the point standings may be altered dramatically during the
running of the Jack Gunn Memorial coming up on Friday evening, August
20. This event will feature three 20-lap features for sprint cars.
Further information is available by contacting the speedway office
at 717.697.5000.
On Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway Fred Rahmer became the winningest driver in the history of the speedway as he won the 25-lap 410 sprint car feature. The win gave Rahmer 60 victories with 59 in 410 sprints and one in 358 sprint cars. That puts him past the great Ray Tilley who won 18 times in sprint cars and 41 super modified feature races.
Chad Layton won the 20-lap 358 sprint car feature.
THE HAGERSTOWN SPEEDWAY will be a busy place on Saturday, August 14th. The four card program will feature the late models, Hoosier Tires late model sportsman, Ernie’s Salvage Yard pure stocks and the exciting enduro dash. Gates open at 5:00 PM with warm ups beginning at 7:00 PM. Adults admission is only $10 with children under 12 Free.
Highlighting the four feature program will be the Maryland State 40 for the late models. The 40-lap feature will pay $2,500 to the winner and double points. Roy Deese Jr is the current point leader in the late models. The Laurel, MD driver leads second place Jason Covert of York Haven, PA by 166 points. A win by Deese would go a long way towards his fourth track championship. Frankie Plessinger of Big Cove Tannery, PA, Brent Smith of Mercersburg, PA and Alan Sagi of Hagerstown round out the top five.
Larry Baer of Dover, PA is only 16 points ahead of defending track champion Richard Walls of St. Thomas, PA. Baer lost the title last year to Walls by a slim margin in the final race of the season and is looking to pad his lead Saturday night with a win. Completing the top five in points are Mike Walls of St. Thomas, PA, Bobby Beard of Hanover, PA and Doug Paxson of Bethesda.
The battle for the track championship in the pure stocks is equally as close. Seven-time feature winner Mike Warrenfeltz of Hagerstown has a slight seven point lead over Ronnie Dennis of Jessup. Rounding out the top five are Brian Tavenner of Winchester, VA, Hans Stamberg of Barnesville and Eugene Conlee of Hanover.
The Hagerstown Speedway is located six miles west of Hagerstown, MD on U.S. Route 40. For additional information, contact the speedway office at 301-582-0640
FOURTEEN 45-MILE, 18-LAP, SPORTS CAR RACES featuring over 20 classes of race cars will take the green flag at Pocono Raceway, Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, as the thirty-fourth annual Sports Car Club of America Double Nationals come to the 2.5-mile Northeastern Pennsylvania speed plant at Long Pond.
As part of the Northeast SCCA points chase, the Pocono Sports Car Grand Prix, features club racers, aiming for qualifying spots in September at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the SCCA championship runoffs, often dubbed "The Olympics of Auto Racing." Among the many luminaries to come out of the SCCA club ranks are this year’s Indy 500 winner, Buddy Rice. Both Michael and John Andretti cut their racing teet in SCCA club racing. Even 79-year old Paul Neman, the movie actor, who still takes his turn at the wheel of a GT-1 on accasion in club racing, used the SCCA club route to move into Trans-Am competition. To this day, Newman’s car number reflects this age.
The competing SCCA racing machines cover a wide spectrum of shapes and sizes. Traditional, open-wheel, wingless classes, such as Formula Vee and Formula Ford provide lap after lap of tight racing. The Showroom Stock/Touring classes enable street legal Camaros, Firebirds, Maustangs, Corvettes and others to go wheel to wheel, fender to fender around Pocono’s 2.5-mile road course.
The fastest cars on the track will be the Formula Atlantics, which are three quarters the size of an Indianapolis car.
